Hiring for Safety Building a safe workplace begins before an employee's first day on the job. While you cannot legally refuse to hire someone based on past workers' compensation claims or safety violations, there are proactive steps you can take during the hiring process to set everyone up for success. **Write accurate job descriptions.** A clear job description helps candidates self-select. This is especially important for physically demanding roles. **Be upfront about hazards and how they're managed.** Transparency builds trust and ensures candidates understand what they're signing up for. **Ask targeted interview questions.** Probe for stress tolerance, teamwork ability, attention to detail, and communication skills—all factors that influence safe behavior. **Verify certifications.** Ensure candidates hold appropriate credentials, or confirm their willingness to obtain them. Safety Training Training is the backbone of a safe workplace. Without it, even the best-designed safety systems can fail. Your safety training program should be practical, applicable, and consistent with your organization's safety culture. It should also be repeated whenever the safety program is updated or when a deficiency is identified—typically at least annually.
