Active Listening: Hearing vs. Understanding

Can You Really Hear Me? Listening and hearing are not the same thing. Hearing is a physical process — sound enters your eardrum, passes through your ear canal, and registers in your brain. Listening, however, is what you do with that sound and how you interpret it. Listening is an active skill that must be learned, practiced, and continually refined. We do a tremendous amount of listening every day, yet research shows that good communicators spend far more time listening than talking. In an age of constant digital distraction, choosing to truly listen is a powerful differentiator. What is Active Listening? Active listening means making a conscious effort to understand things from the speaker's point of view. It includes signaling to the speaker that you are engaged and that you have understood what they are saying. Active listening involves three key dimensions: 1. **Listening for content** — What is actually being said? 2. **Responding to feelings** — What emotions are behind the words? Is the speaker happy, anxious, frustrated, or excited? 3. **Reading non-verbal cues** — What are their facial expressions, posture, and gestures communicating? Is their voice shaky, confident, or hesitant? Tips for Becoming a Better Listener **Make a decision to listen.** Close your mind to clutter and give the speaker your undivided attention. **Do not interrupt.** Let people
