What's the Difference? You've likely heard the terms *code of conduct* and *code of ethics* used interchangeably — and in many workplaces, that's perfectly acceptable, as the two are closely related. However, there is a subtle but meaningful distinction: **Code of Conduct:** Focuses primarily on **behavior** — what employees should and should not do in specific situations. **Code of Ethics:** Leans more heavily toward **moral principles**, while also incorporating rules of conduct. It addresses the *why* behind the behavior. **Etiquette:** Refers to a set of conventions around **appropriate social behavior** — things like how to greet a client or how to communicate in a professional setting. Understanding these distinctions helps you decide which framework applies to a given workplace situation. Spreading the Word Once your code of conduct is finalized, it needs to be communicated to the entire organization — and done so in a way that conveys its importance. This should be treated as a positive organizational milestone. When announcing the code, make sure employees know: **Why** the company decided to create one **What the goal** of the code is **Who worked on it** **When** it comes into effect **Who** it applies to **How to access a copy** (paper, PDF, company intranet, etc.) **Who to contact** with questions or suggestions Every employee must have easy access to a copy
